2013 Statewide Referendum Petition Filing
An act of the General Assembly can be placed on the 2014 General Election ballot by the submission of petitions containing at least 55,736 signatures of Maryland registered voters.
Timeline:
- Wednesday, May 1, 2013 - Deadline for requesting advance determination of sufficiency of referendum petition format.
- Friday, May 31, 2013 at 11:59 pm - Deadline for filing one-third of the required number of signatures (18,579) with the Secretary of State.
- Thursday, June 20, 2013 - Deadline to verify and count the signatures on the referendum petition.
- Monday, June 24, 2013 - Deadline to certify the results of the first submission of the required signatures.
- Sunday, June 30, 2013 at 11:59 pm - Deadline for filing the balance of the required number of signatures (37,157) with the Secretary of State.
- Saturday, July 20, 2013 - Deadline to verify and count the signatures on the referendum petition.
- Tuesday, July 23, 2013 - Deadline to certify the results of the full referendum petition verification.
2012 Petition Filings
New Party Petitions
- On Wednesday, April 25, 2012, the Americans Elect Party submitted petitions in order to seek party recognition in the State of Maryland. As of May 3, 2012, there are 11,317 accepted signatures and 3,742 rejected signatures out of the purported 18,450 signatures submitted. In order to become a recognized party in Maryland, 10,000 signatures need to be accepted. Accordingly, the Americans Elect party is now a recognized political party in Maryland.

The petition verification process must be completed within 20 days of the receipt of the petitions.
2008 New Party Petition Filings
On Monday, August 4, 2008, two groups submitted petitions to form New Political Parties in Maryland - the Constitution Party and the Independent Party. The results of the petition verification are available. The petition verification process was completed by August 25, 2008.

Maryland law grants the citizens of Maryland certain petition rights. These rights include:
- the ability to bring an Act of the General Assembly to a referendum vote;
- the ability to establish new political parties; and,
- the ability to nominate unaffiliated candidates to the ballot.
